Dumbbell Bench Press

Dumbbells force each arm to carry its own load and let your shoulders move naturally — which is why this is my default chest press for clients over the barbell version.
Tips
- Set your shoulder blades first: pull them back and down into the bench, and keep them pinned for the whole set.
- Keep a slight arch in the lower back and your feet planted — leg drive keeps you stable.
- Lower the dumbbells to the outside of your chest with elbows about 45° from your torso.
- Press up and slightly inward, like you're drawing an A — the squeeze at the top is where the chest finishes the work.
- Take 2–3 seconds on the way down. The stretch at the bottom drives growth.
Common Mistakes
- Going too heavy too soon — the weights wobble, the reps shorten, and the triceps take over. Own the weight before you add to it.
- Losing shoulder-blade position — shoulders roll forward at the bottom and take stress the chest should be getting.
- Bouncing out of the bottom — the stretch position is the most productive and the most vulnerable. Control it.
- Elbows flared to 90° — shoulder-grinder. Tuck them slightly.
